This weekend saw Notts gymnasts Isla, Ramiyah, Alyssa, Caitlin, Scarlett and Molly travel to Guildford for their levels national finals.

Saturday 1st Nov - Level 3

WAVL14-Ramiyahisla

Isla and Ramiyah started the weekend with in age level 3, they both started strongly on vault (Ramiyah 9th with 12.650) followed by clean routines on bars. Moving onto beam Isla scored a fabulous 13.050 to be top scorer in GB on this piece and Ramiyah 3rd with 12.600, they both finished elegantly on floor Isla scoring 12.800 (3rd on this piece).
Overall Isla finished 4th and Ramiyah 8th out of 39. This combined with their compulsory scores from earlier in the year placed them nationally 13th and 12th respectively. This is an excellent result with Isla over coming her elbow injury set back earlier in the year and Ramiyah conquering her beam confidence. The East Midlands team, along with Madison from Coalville, finished 8th.

The afternoon saw Caitlin, Scarlett and Molly compete at level 2. The girls started strongly on floor even though Scarlett suffered a fall on her newly learnt double back, Molly 5th on this piece (12.700) and Caitlin 8th (12.500). As they moved to vault all 3 girls performed pike yurchenkos - Caitlin's just over cooked hers with the adrenaline, Scarlett ranked 3rd scoring 13.000. Bars saw Scarlett (8th scoring 11.900) and Molly performed cleanly whilst Caitlin suffered an uncharacteristic error. They finished their day strongly on beam - Molly just having 1 fall, Caitlin ranked 4th with 12.550 and Scarlett 9th with 12.150. Overall in a tight competition of 29 gymnasts Scarlett finished 5th, Caitlin 11th and Molly 17th. Scarlett and Caitlin's combined compulsory and voluntary scores placed them Nationally 8th & 9th respectively, another fantastic result for the girls who have worked extremely hard all year.

Notts win Club of the Year at Nottingham Post Sports Awards

post2014-group

NOTTINGHAM Gymnastics Academy aims to keep raising the bar after winning the Club of the Year title at the 2014 Nottingham Post Sports Awards, stresses coach Claire Starkey.

Starkey was a founder of the club in West Bridgford almost 20 years ago and it has just enjoyed one of its best ever years – with Becky and Ellie Downie leading the way on the international stage.

Olympian Becky won double gold at the Commonwealth Games last summer and European bars gold, while youngster sister Ellie won gold, silver and bronze at the European Juniors and then silver and three bronze medals at the Youth Olympics in China.

"Everyone at the club has been working hard for several years and we're really, really pleased that it's been recognised, so thanks to the Nottingham Post, which has supported us over the years, and to those who nominated us. It's absolutely brilliant," said Starkey.

The club is doing so well it has a waiting list of 600 wanting to join.

"We work very hard to make it a great venue for people that want to do gymnastics," added Starkey.

Sandra Clarke, 26th October 2014

Rushcliffe Leisure Centre

By Claire Starkey

I was so thrilled to see so many entries for my mum's memorial competition. It has tripled in size in 3 years.

This year I was away in China for several weeks at the World Championships before the competition and the rest of the coaching team pulled out all the stops. We had over 100 entries, including a team from Belgium.

Credit must go to Jo Miller and Jemma Wilson who organised the event along with parents who all did a fabulous job.

Next year we may have to consider to split the days!

Everyone had a good time and I must thank all the judges, parents, friends & family, coaches & of course the gymnasts for making the Sandra Clarke a competition my mum would be proud of.
